This week saw Lechlade Library Working Group speaking out against Cllr Hawthorne’s claims in the local press that community groups want to run their own libraries (details here). Newnham Library Group very quickly followed suit writing on their blog:
“Mark Hawthorne said that community groups are ‘excited’ to be given the ‘opportunity’ to take on their libraries, and that these groups are ‘frustrated’ at the disruption that the legal challenge may cause to these plans. This is DEFINITELY not the case with Newnham nor, we’re sure, with other communities in the same position. We have submitted a business plan to run the branch as a community library, fearing that we would otherwise have no library at all, but Newnham residents would much rather the library stayed within the County Council system”
They also told us that “as a “community” we are decidedly under-whelmed by Mark Hawthorne’s comments”
Yet this evening saw Mark Hawthorne, this time on Channel 4’s National News (watch here), claim AGAIN that his plans are what communities want, a news item that featured the same community groups contradicting him…….does he think if he says it often enough it will be true…?
