Culture, Media and Sport Commitee : Library Closure Inquiry Launched

We have today had news that the Culture, Media and Sport Committee are launching an inquiry into library closures. It is a national inquiry. We will be submitting evidence. We are sure we played a big part in prompting them into action with our high court victory.

As you may remember many of us wrote to the DCMS (who are supposedly, although we have not seen much proof of this yet, responsible for superintending the provision of public libraries) over the year asking them to intervene in Gloucestershire and a group of us went to London to see DCMS officials in April https://foclibrary.wordpress.com/2011/04/15/fogl-meet-with-dcms-officials-over-concerns-around-gccs-library-plans/ they did nothing however and allowed GCC to continue down its unlawful path.

If it weren’t for Friends of Gloucestershire Libraries many of our libraries would have closed, illegally, 6 months ago. So hooray for us! Let us hope the DCMS finally start to do their job before it is too late for others.

Given that Gloucestershire County Council are seemingly failing to understand what the ruling means we will also be writing to DCMS officials to plead that they superintend this time and make sure GCC get it right.

The criteria are quite restrictive. I suppose this is normal but have no experience. Perhaps a county-wide meeting could result in a joint document to the committee with multiple signatories?

      Hi Keith,
I think a county-wide submission might be a bit difficult to coordinate, as there will be different considerations in different areas. OUr suggestion would be for individuals/local groups to submit their own, but if they didn’t want to do this, they would be very welcome to view the one that FoGL are going to submit and co-sign it if they wish.

It’s in TiG today. On page 2 right now, but if it receives recommendations, or comments, it could move up to the first page…
